Television News Maps
There are many unique challenges in creating maps for television. The resolution of the television sets limits on the amount of information (detail) that can be presented. In addition to the limited screen size, graphics must appear within a smaller “safe area” so they display on all televisions. Font sizes are limited, no to small that they are illegible, not to big that they are oppressive. High Definition television allows more freedom over the on 480p standard.
The following images were prepared for a local CBS affiliate in the 1990s. At that time HDTV was early in adoption and 480p was the standard. These images were created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The files were output to Targa (TGA) format for a Chryon Character Generator used in their weather and news broadcasts.
